New Look, New Feel: Your New Bank Notes

OTTAWA, Feb. 19, 2013 /CNW/ –
During the holidays you may have received some jewellery or a new mobile phone. Just as you treat these valuable items with respect and care, the same goes for your currency. Canada’s new polymer bank notes are easy to verify, remarkably durable and extremely low maintenance. Unlike jewellery or a phone, they don’t need to be polished or have their batteries charged. And when handled properly, they will last a very long time.

So just how much longer will they last, compared to the old paper notes? Read on for the answer to that question, as well as other tidbits of information about your new polymer notes.

Canada’s new polymer bank notes will last at least two and a half times longer than paper notes. To ensure that they last as long as possible, they should be handled properly. For example, avoid creasing, crumpling, or stapling them. But if a note becomes creased or crumpled, flatten it by applying pressure or curling it in your hand.

The new series of bank notes was rigorously tested in laboratories to check their durability in varying mechanical, chemical and temperature conditions. They performed very well. While polymer notes are strong and it’s hard to start a tear, if they become nicked, a tear can spread easily. Torn notes can be repaired with tape and used again, but once returned to the Bank of Canada, they will be removed from circulation.

If you spill something on your polymer notes, not to worry. They’re very resistant to moisture and staining, so if they do get soiled (say you accidentally knock over your coffee on them), the notes easily wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Tips that count
Before counting a stack of new notes (paper or polymer), you can separate them by fanning, tapping or shuffling. The best technique for counting a stack of polymer notes is to hold it in one hand and use your thumb to push the bill into your other hand. Canada’s new polymer notes represent an exceptional pairing of design and technology. With leading-edge security features, they are among the most advanced in the world, and enable Canada to stay ahead of counterfeiting risks. With a little effort and care in handling, they will maintain their quality and circulate efficiently for years to come.
