Canadian Diplomat involved in Iran hostage crisis dies at 88

John Sheardown, the former Canadian diplomat who helped six Americans escape Iran during the hostage crisis of 1979, died in hospital last Sunday night. He was 88.

Mr Sheardown, who served as the chief immigration officer in Iran, played a pivotal role in the so-called “Canadian Caper” by providing shelter when CIA operatives posed as members of a film production company to rescue US citizens on the run following the Iranian revolution.
