Responding to reports of further human rights violations against Iranian citizens, including against citizen Saeed Malekpour, the Harper Administration is invoking this extra step under the Special Economic Measures Act.

“We are deeply concerned by reports of an increase in arrests and death sentences in Iran,” said Richmond Hill Conservative MP Costas Menegakis in a statement.

Menegakis further went on to describe the imminent execution of Malekpour on “sham charges of spreading corruption.”

“Sadly, Saeed’s case is but one example of the regime’s utter disregard for human rights and its failure to meet internationally recognized norms of due process and transparency,” stated Menegakis.

According to the government, Canada is sending a clear message to Iran that it is holding it accountable for its actions.

Baird inserted that 3 individuals are being added to the list of supporters and associates of the Iranian regime whose assets have been frozen. He proudly stated that this will put Canada as placing the toughest sanctions on Iran in the world.

“With its actions, Iran continues to undermine regional and global security and stability,” added Baird.

What exactly these additional sanctions will mean for Iran’s citizens is yet to be seen.
